“It’s not cheating unless you get caught.” My friend in college told me this, I thought it sounded pretty stupid at the time, but he later explained what he meant. In college a lot of times you will manage your time unwisely or procrastinate to study until a day or two before the midterm or final. Most likely you aren’t going to have adequate time to study and do well on the test. This is when many students resort to some form of cheating to pass the test. This could be going to class early to write little notes on your desk, or writing notes on a tiny piece of paper to leave in your lap. I can go into many more ways of cheating, but I’ll leave that topic for another post ;]. Here at CollegExperience.net we keep it real, I believe there is nothing wrong with cheating if you don’t get caught, but let me elaborate. Ya, you can cheat on a midterm and get a good grade, but after you better learn the material so you can do well on the final. If not, you get caught cheating yourself and end up doing poorly on the final. For random courses not related to your major you may be able to get away with cheating through the whole course without any real consequences. But if you try and do the same thing for major related courses you will only hurt yourself. Later in the upper division courses you’ll struggle to understand the material, and even later in life you will struggle with your job. Imagine a doctor or engineer who cheated their way through college and have to perform surgery or designing a bridge. I’m not promoting cheating, I’m just saying if you have to, don’t get caught during college or later on in life.

yeah right
It’s not cheating unless you get caught a motto that all nascar teams live by.The only problem with cheating on a test just to pass it is you really never learned the subject that way,and most are taking the class to land a job.So cheating could keep you from getting that job your diploma says you are qualified for.
haha thats interesting, nascar does the same thing? Ya thats why i said if you cheat on a test, you have to learn it on your own after so you can perform your job =D
Hey there. This is a motto that I lived by during school. lol But you know, it’s like you said, it’s not really beneficial so I only did it on subjects that didn’t really mean much to me, such as History. I never cheated in Math. I figured that I was actually going to use that in life. lol Later.
You are so right! My issue was I knew the material but always had major brain farts LOL So sometimes you just need a little “Help” to get the job done!
hahah ya i agree with that. during the test i just go blank sometimes, so having a little extra help for safety is always nice.
I agree with the idea that by cheating you cheat yourself out of the actual learning (thus the problem going from midterm to final); however, I would argue that college classes have devolved from places of actual learning into arenas of survival. Very few people I know emerge from college having garnered significant knowledge from the majority of their classes; hence, why this “cheating” article/concept unfortunately makes a lot of sense.
This is the most depressing thing I’ve ever heard. I don’t even know how to respond.
My best friend, she cheated, she got kicked out of school. Its not worth the risk, you will never be able to get into another school again
Hi – Simple Question….How much do you care about people?
Executive Beryl Zyskind supports peace
When’s the last time you watched the news on Haiti or Chile? The people of Chile & Haiti need Food, Clothing & Financial Assistance
Trust Fund Manager Beryl Zyskind is raising tents for the children of Haiti
If you think an F is bad, try cheating in college. And when you get caught, you WILL get kicked out (an F will actually be what you get if they like you…. a LOT), and then people who study don’t have to worry about it anymore.
Game Over.
so nicely put, as Jessica said, just take the 60, or even the 20, rather than expulsion, and just grade replace, drop, withdraw whatever later on.
(and before you think this is mean, I am not really gearing this toward those of you who have written on your hand one time because you had pulled an all-nighter and just couldn’t absorb anymore)
“I would argue that college classes have devolved from places of actual learning into arenas of survival.”
Yep. I don’t cheat outright but I do “grease the wheels” a bit in my favor. For example, making cheat sheets that have a little more info than the professor said was allowed or using my calculator to store formulas. When I had a prof that recirculated verbatim past exam questions (multiple choice answers were identical as well), I simply stored all the problems and correct answers in my calculator. Got a 98 on the final (one question wasn’t recirculated) when the average was a 60 something. I also finished in half the time of everyone else, and had to wait 15 minutes before turning it in so it didn’t look obvious that I was pseudo-cheating. I’ve also written 10 page research papers using facts from books and didn’t bother keeping track of where they came from (turned a 3 month paper into a 3 day one). I also made up or morphed a bunch of quotes to better fit my arguments. On my biblio page I just randomly picked pages from my books and said quotes came from there…got a 92/100.
And of course I do pretty much all my homework from instructor’s solutions manuals whenever available. Why should I bother spending 10 hours doing an assignment that I’ll forget everything about by the time the exam comes around? Screw it, I’ll just get it done in an hour with the solutions and cram before the test.
All of these things I do are unlikely to ever be detected, and most profs don’t bother trying to prosecute you since their time is supposedly more valuable than yours.

What do you mean !!???
I cheated all my way from High School till M.D. and I retired as a millionair.
Wow. I am amazed that 1) you posted this advice and 2) that there are so many people agreeing with you that some cheating is acceptable. I’m not pretending that every college class is worth your time – some are virtually useless. But cheating to any degree in any class not only cheats you out learning the information, but establishes a pattern of dishonesty that’ll stick with you throughout your life. You think getting kicked out of college sucks? Try getting fired for lying to your boss (or worse your shareholders) when you have a mortgage to pay and a family to feed. It may sound dramatic but THIS is the real unfiltered advice. As a business owner, I can tell you honesty is a characteristic that will serve you well throughout your life and can ruin your life if you choose to ignore it. You may be lying to yourself now about knowing the answers today but where does that lead you? Will you lie to a potential employer about your experience? Maybe lie to your boss about your work? What does this say about your work ethic and the way you view yourself? You have a lot of good advice on your site – whether you realize it or not, you are influencing a lot of people. Please think about the example you are setting by condoning lying.
I agree with your article!!!
There is a huge difference between working hard and working smart …
If you cheat then you compromise your integrity. I won’t want to work with you.
