I'm 38 years old curently in college as a non traditional student. I'm pursuing a double Major (Business/Informations Systems Management and Computer Science/Web Design). I believe my majors compliment each other and will help me find employment as a web designer/programmer or managing a group of them. My 20 years of experience, without a degree, in this field should also help me. Thanks for your article. I'm enjoying reading your blog and I often wondered how long it would realistically take me (with summer classes) to finish.

It really depends on the majors. Some majors are huge, taking up 80-100 credits. This leaves little room for fun electives and little flexibility. If, however, you have a small major like I do (30 credits) it is much easier and more feasible to do a double major.

I think doing a double major is a great idea if a student can handle the work load. However, I disagree with you about finishing in 4.5 years. I managed to finish in less than 3.5 years with one summer off! I finished my B.S. in English and a B.S. in psychology with departmental honors and a 3.77 G.P.A.!

My school actually requires you to major then triple minor, one in each category (pre-professional, social sciences, etc.). I think it helps that we have winter quarters and no generals to take, because I can still graduate in four years; 3.5 if I didn't want to take a few fun electives.

I definately recommend double majoring if you can pull it off (it is a lot of work). I got a B.A. in Business Management and a B.S. is Computer Engineering and it gave me a large variety of options when I graduated.
