This post is kind of random from the rest of the site, but a lot of people are having issues getting their iPhone 2g version 3.0 T-Mobile Edge to work (including myself). If you are getting this error: “Could not activate cellular data network: You are not subscribed to a cellular data service.” This post if for you. 

If you need instructions on how to unlock/jailbreak your iPhone to 3.0 iClarified.com has great instructions on any kind of iPhone unlocking/jailbreaking.

If your like me, after upgrading to 3.0 you got onto Cydia to install the T-mobile T-Zones app to enable their edge network. Since most people did that on the earlier versions of the iPhone OS. But that doesn’t work with 3.0 and it makes the Cellular Data Network tab disappear in General -> Network.

Instructions to get your T-Mobile Edge working on 3.0

After upgrading to 3.0, DONT install the Cydia T-Zones app, just go to the Cellular Data Network tab and enter…

APN: epc.tmobile.com
Username:
Password:

Then you are all set to go! Pretty easy huh?

Note: If you accidently already installed the T-Mobile tzones app, just remove it in Cydia and restart your iphone. The Cellular Data Network tab should reappear. I hope this helps anyone, because it took me a while to figure it out.

Also if you are using a prepaid plan for your iPhone the link below might help you get your internet working.

  1. I just unlocked and jailbroke my iphone 2g, but it is not getting any signal from my tmobile sim card. I looked in the network tab and all i found was VPN number!? I am a little lost!

  2. Did the unlocked phone work before you upgraded? Anyways if you just got it and it does it get very limited signal, like 1-2 bars randomly if you drive around in the car? If it does then the antenna might be damaged, and its easier just to get a new phone. If you get no signal at all you can try downgrading your modem firmware. Modem firmware can be found in settings ->general -> about.

Ey man what data plan does the epc.tmobile.com work on??…i’ve got the smartphone data plan right now, as that’s what T-Mo told me to do due to me not being able to get on the browser without wi-fi and use internet2.voicestream.com as my APN.     @ernie: it happened to me once, it just went away tho by itself, not sure what happened

    @jimmy: idk, ive never tried it on the 3g. but it should be the same

    @millie: try restoring the phone to standard 3.0 and then try unlocking/jailbreaking again.

  20. I have an iPhone 2G w/ 3.0 firmware. Put epc.tmobile.com as data tab APN, and reboot. It still gives me the could not activate cellular data. . . oh and I also have a Tmobile prepaid sim-card in it but it shouldn’t matter should it?

  24. I was using sidecking phone and now i am trying to get my iphone up and runing with T-mobile as a provider, but have same Edge problems. Does anyone know if it matters that I have the unlimited internet plan that says “sideckick plan” ? does it matter that it was for sideckick, or does it just look at this as internet data plan?

  25. @Lauren: What do you mean? If the iphone is unlocked/jailbreaked just put any sim card in and it should be able to get reception, make calls, text(if u have a text plan), and use wifi. You have to follow my instructions to get the edge network.
    @Ismar: It has to be the standard unlimited data plan for 5.99, but i think they raised it to $10 now. The sidekick plan WONT work.

Hey I have a iphone its unlocked with a t-mobile prepaid sidekick plan and the text and phone calls work perfectly but for some reason if I try to go on the internet it say “edge not working , you need to subcribe to edge” .. Idk wht to do .. Please help me !!!! Is there a way to activate edge or should it work with just with wifi .. Anything that can get me internet I’ll do please help me!!! :(

    I went to the apn and changed it to : epn.tmoble.com
    User: “my phone number”
    Password: “the password i use on the tmoble site?

    I am very sorry to waste your time again.. but just a tad bit of detail would help so much!

  47. So I unlocked my 2G iPhone for my girlfriend and set it up to work on T-Mobile. I had to switch her from the sidekick plan to the smartphone data plan and I used epc.tmobile.com as the APN. Everything seems to work fine, but every so often a message pops up saying something along the lines of “the cellular network settings are no longer valid”. I just dismiss the message and everything still works fine. Anyone have a fix for this?

  53. Ok. So I have an unlocked iPhone 3g w/Web2Go plan.
    Can’t figure this out and maybe someone has some insight.

    • Web2Go works on my iPhone 2g.
    • Web2Go will not work my iPhone 3g. Tried all three apns, as well as Cydia T-Mobile packages. No luck.

    Anyone else running into these issues? Anyone solved them?

    And it didn’t work. I found that the following worked better.

    Go to Settings -> General-> Network -> Cellular Data Network

    fill out the following in this way.

    APN: wap.voicestream.com
    Username:
    Password:

    Works for me on tmobile.

  60. Thanks, this really helped. I kept losing my Edge connection on the current 3.1.3 Spirit Jailbreak / Blacksn0w unlock. When I checked my settings there was absolutely nothing in the Cellular Data Network settings, that could have been why!

  61. I am ahving the same issue. I have the unlimited t-mobile plan. The latest version if OS for the Iphone 2G with no installed cydia app for unlocking t-mobile. I enter the epc.tmobile.com and I cannot get the internet to work.
